Heaton - Sarah Custer

Mrs. Sarah Custer Heaton died yesterday at 1 o’clock at her home on East College Street at the advanced age of 85 years, after an illness of several years. She was born at Pittsburg, Penn., Oct. 2, 1810. When four years of age she, with her parents, came down the river to Cincinnati on a flat boat, and settled in Butler County, Ohio. She lived thee until she was married to James Heaton, which occurred September 30, 1830. The young couple at once came to Indiana and settled in Crawfordsville, on the land where she lived until her death. Her husband, James, Heaton, died July 5, 1881. To them twelve children were born, five of whom are still living, Frank M., James, Edgar J., Elizabeth Hills and Laura Sellers. She united with the Methodist Church the year she was married and during all these years has lived not only a zealous but an earnest Christian life. She was indeed a mother in Israel. -s
